Apple has always been a company that pushes the envelope when it comes to technology. With the release of the iPhone 12 series, they have introduced a new ceramic shield for the screen.
iPhones are costly and delicate gadgets, but Apple has incorporated a feature in recent versions called Ceramic Shield to assist you to safeguard your investment. This is screen protection, and it’s an alternative to the Gorilla Glass on many Android phones. Apple claims that Ceramic Shield is effective against scratches, bumps, cracks, shocks, and other types of damage.
Is the Shield in the iPhone 12 and 13 an Improvement?
The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max and the more recent iPhone 13 equivalents have all been subjected to drop testing, with the majority of the studies coming to the conclusion that the ceramic shield is stronger than previously released models but not unbreakable. We’ve seen far fewer people come in for screen repairs for the 12 series than we did for previous models, although even this new and improved screen shield can be broken.
What is Ceramic Shield, and how does it work?
Ceramic Shield is a technology that Apple has been using in some of its products for a while now. It was originally used in the iPhone X and continued with the iPhone 11 and 12 series. The ceramic shield is made up of two layers: an inner layer of glass and an outer layer of ceramic. The glass layer is what you see on the screen and it is what you touch. The ceramic layer is bonded to the glass and covers the entire surface of the phone.
The two layers work together to create a shield that is extremely strong. The ceramic layer helps to protect the glass from scratches, cracks, and other damage. It also absorbs shock if your phone is dropped
Corning, the same company that produces Gorilla Glass, creates Ceramic Shield by embedding ceramic nanocrystals into the glass through a high-temperature crystallization procedure.
Furthermore, Ceramic Shield employs dual ion-exchange, which simply means increasing the size of the ions so they are more solid. The combination of these two factors makes for stronger glass that is resistant to bumps and scratches while also being more likely to stay intact if damaged.
It is said to be almost unbreakable, making it a great choice for a screen protector. However, there are some downsides to using this type of shield.
What are the Downsides of using this type of Shield?
The downside to using a ceramic shield is that it can be quite brittle. If you drop your phone, the ceramic layer may shatter and you will need to replace the entire screen. Another downside is that the ceramic shield is not as effective against scratches as Gorilla Glass. So if you are someone who likes to keep their phone free of scratches, you may want to stick with a standard glass screen protector.
Can I get my iPhone Ceramic Shield Repaired in Vancouver?
At the moment, we do not offer ceramic shield repairs. We can only replace the entire screen if it is damaged. However, we are expecting this to change in the near future as more and more people start using ceramic shields.
